Carpet Stretching

Carpet Stretching in Kanata & Ottawa West

A rippled floor is a tension problem, not a carpet problem. Kanata Carpet Pros re-tensions loose, waved and buckling carpet across Kanata and Ottawa West with a proper power stretcher — the carpet is detached at the edges, braced wall to wall, pulled drum-tight, re-hooked on the tack strip and re-tucked. Furniture out, furniture back, usually inside a single visit. It costs a small fraction of replacing carpet that still has years of wear left in it, and the price is fixed in writing before we start.

  • Power stretcher, never a knee-kicker
  • Ripples and buckling pulled flat
  • Tack strip replaced where needed

What went wrong

Why carpet ripples in an Ottawa house

Ripples arrive slowly enough that most people stop noticing them, then arrive at a doorway and trip. Understanding what caused them tells you whether stretching will hold or whether something else needs fixing first.

The backing relaxed

Carpet backing creeps under load. Years of traffic across the same lanes work the carpet gradually away from the tack strip at the walls, and the slack has to go somewhere — it gathers into a wave across the middle of the room. This is ordinary ageing, not a defect, and it is exactly what a stretch is for.

Ottawa humidity swings

Indoor air here goes from bone-dry in January to genuinely humid in July, and carpet backing expands and contracts with it. Over enough cycles the carpet ends up longer than the room, and the extra shows up as ridges — which is why so many of these calls come in during February and March.

It was never tight to begin with

A carpet fitted with a knee-kicker alone was tensioned by somebody's leg, a few inches at a time, at the edges. That is fine for tucking and useless for tensioning a whole span. Carpet installed that way starts rippling early, often within two or three years, and it is the single most common history behind a first stretching call.

Furniture that never moves

Heavy pieces sitting in one spot for a decade pin the carpet locally while the rest of the room creeps around them. Sliding a sectional across an already-loose floor can also drag the carpet off the strip in one go, which is why a fresh ripple often appears the week after a room gets rearranged.

Where it goes wrong

The stretching mistakes that bring ripples back

Stretching is not difficult work, but it is easy to do in a way that looks right for a month. These are the shortcuts that put the same waves back in the same room by the following winter.

Stretching in one direction only

A room has to be tensioned across both axes, from opposing walls, in sequence. Pulling a floor tight along its length alone leaves the width slack, and the slack simply migrates. The ripple moves rather than disappears, which is why people sometimes say a stretch "made it worse over there".

Re-using tack strip that has given up

The pins on old tack strip bend flat and lose their bite, and rusted strip in a basement crumbles when it is loaded. Stretching carpet onto dead strip is stretching onto nothing. Any strip that will not hold gets replaced as part of the job rather than optimistically re-used.

Trimming instead of tensioning

It is possible to make a ripple vanish by slicing out the excess and re-tucking the edge. It looks fixed and the carpet is now genuinely too small for the room, so the next relaxation cycle has nowhere to go and the seams take the strain instead. If someone quotes you a stretch and reaches first for a knife, ask what they are planning to do with the offcut.

Stretching carpet that should be replaced

Delaminated carpet — where the secondary backing has separated from the primary — produces soft, shifting lumps rather than clean ridges, and no amount of tension fixes it. We check for this before quoting, because taking money to stretch a delaminated floor is taking money for a job that cannot work.

Questions about rippled carpet

Why is my carpet rippling or buckling?

Three causes account for nearly all of it. The carpet has relaxed and crept loose of the tack strip over years of use; it was knee-kicked rather than power-stretched when it went in, so it was never properly tight; or Ottawa's swing from dry winter air to humid summer has expanded and contracted the backing until it let go. In each case the carpet itself is fine and the tension is what needs replacing.

How much does carpet stretching cost in Kanata?

A single room up to about 300 square feet runs $120 to $250 depending on size and how much of the tack strip needs attention. Each additional room is less. Whole-home work is quoted after a quick look. Either way you get a written fixed price before we start, not an hourly meter.

Can rippled carpet be fixed without replacing it?

Yes, in almost every case. Unless the carpet is torn, delaminated, or worn through, power-stretching pulls it flat and tight again and it stays that way for years. It costs a fraction of new carpet and takes a fraction of the time — most rooms are done inside an hour.

How long does carpet stretching take?

Most single rooms are finished in under an hour once the floor is clear, and a multi-room house is normally a single same-day visit. You can walk on the carpet the moment we lift the tools, and there is no drying or curing time to wait out.

Tired of stepping over that ripple?

Most rooms are flat again inside an hour. Send a photo down the length of the ripple and we'll price it.
