Nylon where it matters
Nylon springs back from crushing better than polyester and takes cleaning better, which is what a rural circulation route needs. It costs more per square foot and lasts long enough in that specific application to be the cheaper choice over time.

A room above an unheated crawl is colder underfoot and the sub-floor flexes more. A higher-density pad gives better support and a little insulating value, which is more useful there than the plushness a thick soft pad would give.

We check what is under each room at the measure rather than specifying a single pad across a whole rural house. It costs almost nothing to vary and it is the difference between a floor that performs everywhere and one that performs in most places.
